My brother’s wedding planner called and said, « Your family canceled your invitation… but they want to keep the $50,000 deposit you paid. » I paused, then replied, « Cancel the whole wedding. » She gasped in surprise. « But sir, you’re not the groom… » I smiled. « No. But I own the venue, the caterer… »

« Be generous, » they said.
« Take the right path.
It’s not about money. »

They appreciated my generosity most when it was accompanied by silence.

I gazed at the perfectly calm city skyline, then asked, « Who told you that you had to keep the deposit? »

There was a silence. « Your mother, » she said cautiously. « She said it wasn’t refundable and that your contribution was a gift, so… that’s settled. »

I let her finish.

So I said, « Cancel the wedding. »

She let out such a loud scream that I heard it through the loudspeaker. « But sir, you’re not the groom… »
I smiled.

« No, » I replied. « But I own the property. »

Dead silence.

« And the catering company, » I continued.

His breathing stopped.

« And the hotel chain they booked for the guests. »

The line came to a complete stop.

On the other side, I could almost hear him recalculating everything.

« You… you own them all? » she murmured.

“Yes,” I replied evenly. “Here’s what will happen: cancel everything. Send me a notice of termination for breach of contract and attempted fraud. And forward me all the emails you received from my mother and brother.”
