Make the cheesecake layer
In a bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until completely smooth and creamy. Take your time here—removing any lumps ensures a silky cheesecake texture once baked. Dollop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture evenly over the strawberry layer, then gently spread it out without mixing it into the fruit.
Add the cake mix
Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix over the top of the cream cheese layer. Make sure the surface is fully covered, but do not stir. Keeping the layers separate is what gives this dessert its signature dump cake texture.
Top with butter
Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the cake mix, aiming to moisten as much of the dry mix as possible. This step helps the topping bake into a golden, slightly crisp crust while still staying tender underneath.
Bake
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling. The center should look set, with visible pockets of strawberry and cheesecake peeking through.
Cool and serve
