Sear the Roast (Optional)
- Start by heating the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. This step is optional, but searing the roast will add extra flavor and a nice crust to the meat.
- Place the beef chuck roast in the hot skillet and sear each side for 2-3 minutes, until browned. Use tongs to turn the roast so that all sides are evenly seared. This caramelization process enhances the richness of the meat, adding a deeper flavor to the dish.
- Once the roast is seared, transfer it to the slow cooker. If you skip the searing step, you can go straight to placing the roast in the slow cooker without this additional step.
Add Ingredients to Slow Cooker
- If you’re using vegetables, add the peeled and chopped potatoes and carrots around the roast in the slow cooker. These vegetables will absorb the flavors of the roast and the seasoning, making them a delicious side dish.
Add Seasonings and Broth
- Sprinkle the ranch seasoning mix, brown gravy mix, and Italian dressing mix evenly over the roast. These three seasoning packets provide the perfect balance of savory, tangy, and herby flavors.
- Pour the beef broth around the roast. The broth will help create the juices for the gravy and keep the roast moist as it cooks. If you don’t have beef broth, you can substitute with water, but broth will give the gravy more depth.
