Intrigued, Lily opened it. At first, she saw only shoes, umbrellas, and scarves. Then, on the top shelf, she spotted a familiar cardboard box. Her mother’s keepsake box. Untouched since the funeral.
Lily and Max were sitting on the floor when she opened the pouch. Inside were her mother’s badge, a medal, some photos, and, at the very bottom, an envelope with her name written on it.
The letter inside read:
My dearest Lily, if you’re reading this, it means life has taken me from you. I want you to know three things. I loved you more than anything—you gave me courage. Max isn’t just a companion; he’s family. And you, my daughter, are my legacy. Be strong. Be gentle. You’re already braver than you know.
Tears streamed down Lily’s face. Max rested his head on her knees, as if he had always known what the letter would say.
To perpetuate his mother’s legacy
The next morning, Lily woke up full of energy. She put her mother’s police hat on her head, brushed Max’s fur until it shone, and went to the neighborhood community center.
At first, the staff hesitated, unsure what to make of a young girl’s request to go on stage. But word of the auction had spread. They knew her story. They gave her a chance.
In front of about twenty children, Lily raised her hand and gave orders just as her mother had done in the past. Max obeyed immediately. Sit. Stay. Fetch. When he brought back a stuffed animal hidden under a chair, the children burst into laughter. For the first time in months, Lily’s smile returned.
