Greek New Year’s Orange Cake (Vasilopita-Style)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour a round 10-inch (25 cm) cake pan or bundt pan.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3–5 minutes).
  3. Add the eggs: Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and orange zest.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
  5. Alternate additions: Add the flour mixture and the orange juice to the wet mixture in batches, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  6. Add the lucky coin: Wrap a clean coin in foil and insert it into the batter, pushing it down gently so it’s hidden in the middle.
  7. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 45–55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool & dust: Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack. Once cooled completely, dust generously with powdered sugar.
