Instructions
- Sauté the garlic: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30–60 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned.
- Add tomatoes and spices: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, black pepper, and sugar (if using). Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. This allows the flavors to develop and meld beautifully.
- Blend (optional): For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to purée the sauce directly in the pot, or let cool slightly and blend in a regular blender.
- Cool and use: Let the sauce cool slightly before spreading on pizza dough. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Tips:
- Adjust garlic to your preference—add more for a stronger garlic kick.
- Add a splash of balsamic vinegar or wine for extra depth of flavor.
- This sauce works great for pizzas, pasta, meatball subs, or as a dipping sauce for garlic knots!
