A middle school level math problem that many adults struggle to solve.

The answer is simple: our brains tend to group together elements they perceive as related. The notation  2(1 + 2)  resembles a multiplication problem with priority, almost like a mathematical function. But mathematics leaves no room for interpretation:  the strict order of operations is what matters.

The perfect trap for tired brains

This little test is much more than just an exercise: it’s an excellent way to awaken our logic, test our rigor… and do a little  mental gymnastics.
No need for sudoku or complicated escape games: a simple equation is enough to get our brains working.

And between us, it’s also a nice reminder: our multitasking female brains, capable of managing  children, work, appointments and social life , can also grapple with some mathematical rules!

The magic of math, adult version

Ultimately, this kind of little challenge shows just how malleable our brains are…   and sometimes a little rusty.   But don’t panic: it’s never too late to relive some school memories, share a math riddle over coffee, or challenge your friends with this puzzle worthy of the school benches.

So,   tempted to suggest another one to your friends and family tonight?

Thank you to everyone who reads these lines.
